Eve Blackmoor (Shelved)

This one never actually got off the ground, at least not yet. Eve Blackmoor was a planned pen name for dark romantasy and dark fairytale retellings, and the concept behind it has actually been sitting with me since 2018.

The working title is A Debt to the Sanguine King, a dark retelling of Snow White. Gwendolyn, called Snow, is a powerful ice elemental, the kind who can call down snow and freeze a room solid without breaking a sweat, and she’s not the least bit afraid of what she can do. She comes from a mountain kingdom with real Austrian Alps energy, and when her father sells her off to settle his kingdom’s debts, she’s shipped south to a very different world, a hill-fortress city with unmistakably Italian bones, think Assisi, but where the basilica should sit at the top of the hill, there’s a palace instead.

The Sanguine King wants her for two reasons: the political alliance, and what she can do as a weapon. His son, the prince she’s actually meant to marry, wants nothing to do with any of it. On their wedding night, he tries to kill her instead, because his heart belongs to a courtier from a rival court. She crawls to the Sanguine King’s own chamber, and he gives her his blood, turning her into a vampire herself. From there, I’m planning for her story to unfold into a relationship with both the Sanguine King and the huntsman the rebel prince and his sorceress lover send after her.

Rather than launching a brand new name for it, this material is eventually being folded into C. J. Beaumont instead, so it can live alongside the rest of my paranormal and dark fantasy-adjacent work.
